Description

type:text

[Abstract] This short note aims to consider the disagreement between reflexive positioning of a foreign student and interactive positioning from others in the Japanese classroom. With the data from my fieldwork in a Japanese classroom, I provide one focal student’s examples, S5’s. For the analysis, I applied positioning theory of Davies & Harré(1990). For S5’s case, he positions himself as a person who can speak Japanese well, but the teacher positions S5 as a person who thinks he can speak Japanese well. Also, some students position S5 as a spokesman when they need to speak Japanese. The disagreement between S5 and the teacher’s positioning imply that S5 has independence and he acquires how to negotiate his position which he insists. Also, the institutional environment around foreign students in Japan needs to be reconsidered in order to respect students’ individuality.
