大地震の発生間隔は数百年から数千年と長く,機器観測データのみでは大地震の履歴を調べることは困難である.歴史文書に記録された被害などの記述を使って過去の地震を調べる歴史地震学は,これまで主に地震学者によってなされてきた.そのため,史料の背景や信頼性などの検討が不十分であった.最近になって地震学者と日本史研究者が共同で新史料の収集,既存史料集のテキストデータベース化,ならびに歴史地震学の研究を始めた.被害を起こした地震のみでなく,日記史料に記録されている地震についてもデータベースを構築している.史料の記述から震度を推定し,震度分布や時間的な変化を調べることで,過去の大地震や将来の発生予測が可能となる.国際的な標準に従った震度データベースを構築する予定である.
Earthquakes have long recurrence interval of hundreds to thousands of years, hence it is difficult to study past earthquakes from instrumental geophysical observation data. In Japan, historical earthquake studies based on historical documents have been mainly conducted by seismologists, hence critical examination on background or reliability of documents were not sufficient. In recent years, historians and seismologists work together to collect historical documents, develop text database of published collections, and study of historical earthquakes. Databases have been constructed not only for damaging earthquakes but also slight earthquakes documented in daily records. Seismic intensities can be estimated from description in historical documents, and their spatial and temporal distributions make it possible to study past earthquakes and to forecast future ones. Intensity Data Point, an international standard database for historical earthquake studies, will be constructed.
