Abstract

This paper examines the task competence which Japanese language learners gain\nin the task performance focused learning style. Fourteen students were administered a role play test provided by the Japan Foundation after they completed an intensive 4-month basic Japanese language course using the Can-do syllabus. The test results showed that 2 students were evaluated as B2 level, 9 students as B1, and 3 students as A2. The average task competence level of the students who studied in the task performance focused learning style was higher than the students who studied in the sentence-pattern focused learning style.
