Duan wu jie (duan yang jie), a festival held on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, originally came from China and has been celebrated in various areas in East Asia. Since the rainy season around the festival was believed to deteriorate people's health, an incantation against the bad luck was indispensable to this annual event, especially for the sake of children, young females. and pregnant women. By investigating endemic folkways of the festival, it is possible to understand the differences of meaning and style between China and Japanese customs. (In Japan, the festival is called "tango no sekku"). This paper focus on the events held in the regions of Zhejiang and jiangxi province from Song era onward. Particularly The dragon boat race in southern Yangzi River reveals characteristics of the traditional Chinese local culture.
