Abstract

This study reports on the team building in which Leader A, who has been involved in basketball instruction for 41 years, became involved in university women's basketball team coaching based on his position as a teacher and led to the university's best four in five years. Their performance at the All-Japan Intercollegiate Basketball Championship was ranked as top 16 or 32 before and until the start of the coaching of Leader A. However, after many twists and turns, in the fifth year, they managed to grow into a team that would be in the final four in the same tournament. To summarize, the efforts of Leader A toward such growth were: (1) creating a team plan considering the composition of players based on a long-term perspective (technology and tactics), (2) holding various invitational tournaments and establishing staff, etc. (operation and system), (3) fostering a team culture for team building as an organization (guidance method), (4) clarifying the reality of the team goal through visualization (mind). To facilitate such efforts, Leader A externalized his coaching philosophy and explained and instilled it progressively while watching the situation of the entire team. The knowledge of this research is deemed extremely helpful in considering the team building of other university sports.
