説明

We aim to clarify the reasoning behind farmers and communities farming tambaguro which is a native soybean variety, in Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture. Data were collated from interviews and postal surveys. Tambaguro is a substitute crop to rice production. Producing tambaguro is potentially profitable although its cultivation is labor intensive as the production process has not been mechanized. However, many farmers had no choice but to grow tambaguro due to the rice production adjustment. Conversely, many farmers planted tambaguro for their personal consumption or as a gift because of its superior flavor. Therefore, native variety conservation must be managed with a broad perspective that incorporates various social and cultural conditions.
