Abstract

This article offers a contrastive analysis on double restrictive focus expressions in Japanese and Chinese, a sentence containing two restrictive focus elements. Double restrictive focus expressions are used far more frequently in Japanese than in Chinese. Compared with simple focus expressions, the semantic function of double focus expressions of Japanese is intensification and disambiguation. Contrastingly, the double focus expressions of Chinese have only the function of intensification.
