Today, the Sacro Monte di Varallo has 45 chapels, either alone or combined into several monumental buildings, one fountain and a magnificent cathedral. Inside these chapels, scenes of Christ’s life and passion are represented by more than 800 painted wood carvings, colored terracotta, and other plastic statues and frescoes. Of the many Sacri Monti, this complex of Varallo is not only by far the oldest in terms of its founding year of 1491, but also the most important in terms of art, architectural and urban planning, and religious history.About such a complex of Varallo, researches are also underway on the vast number artists and architects who have been involved in the work in the more than 500 years since construction began. However, for the early years and many minor artists and architects, there is no or very few documents. Therefore, although it is difficult to describe them in detail, this paper attempts to grasp as much as possible the artists involved in the decoration of the chapels of the Sacro Monte di Varallo as part of my overall understanding of the movement of artists between Sacri Monti and the realities of co-production. In doing so, the time of construction, the names of the artists, their birthplaces, artistic formations, and the time of their activities are incorporated into the table to make it easier to visually grasp the transition. As for the development, Chapter 1 provides an overview of the complex’s long history, including its construction, chapels decoration, and current management, preservation, and maintenance. Next, in Chapter 2, along the current pilgrimage route, the artists who were involved in the construction and decoration of each chapel are specified in chronological order, and transition tables are created with information. In Chapter 3, we will analyze the birthplaces and artistic formations of the artists based on the tables we have created, and conclude with a summary based on the analysis results.Since the complex of Varallo has a huge number of chapels and the artists who worked there, for the sake of paper width, this article will be divided into several issues.
