With international collaborative learning and the use of synchronized CSCL (SCSL) tools increasing, the best educational use of these tools is being considered. When designing a learning support system for foreign language learning, it is necessary to know how social presence, the cultural context of learners, their satisfaction, and learning outcomes interact and inform design choices. In this study, we investigated the relationships among two modes of interaction (text chat or video chat), social presence, ethnicity, and satisfaction. We found that group consciousness and comfort in conversing were raised higher in text chat than in video chat and that text chat groups reported a higher level of perceived social presence than video chat groups.
