Abstract

Parents of high risk neonates need comprehensive family care included to promote relationships and attachment with their baby, and to deal with a crisis, bereavements, the dilemma of decision making and spirituality. However, we have no effective nursing education program in Japan. The objective of this study was to clarify NICU nurses' perception about the problem which now confronts them about family care, and to develop the education program for family care in the perinatal period. A descriptive study was conducted. Subjects were 576 clinical nurses who were members of Academy of Neonatal Nursing in Japan. The structured and semi-structured questionnaire was administered from March 18th to April 18th in 2008 by mail. Questionnaire consisted of demographics, problem about family care, and what program they needed. Quantitative and qualitative analysis were used. The response rate was 37.3% (215 collected). Half the respondents recognized the problem of family care as 'parents could not understand about the infant's condition and treatment' and 'parents come to visit their infant infrequently'. Nurses thought it was difficult to provide family care because of not understanding what the best way was. They needed a education program about support for decision making, crisis intervention for parents, skill of counseling, and care of infants with a life-threatening condition. We constructed a one month education program for family care in the perinatal period involving PBL, role play, case study, and discussion.
