Abstract

Kakuhitsu (ivory pencil) is a small brush-like writing instrument made of ivory. In recent years fourteen materials have been discovered in which letters are pressed into the paper with this tool. Those works were all written from the tenth to the fourteenth century. I have lately found a relevant material for the early ninth century in Daito-Saiiki-Ki (Journal of a Tour in China and Tibet), which is owned by Kōshōji Temple in Kyōto. The present study deals with the letters, signs, usage and vocabulary used in this new material.
