Abstract

The Japanese readings of Chinese texts in the 9th century was based on the free translations, but by the 12th century the literal translations had taken the place of the free ones. For example, in the 9th century the Chinese character 当 was read subeshi, masani...su, masani...semu, ...semu, etc, etc. ; but in the 12th century 当 had only one fixed reading masani...beshi.
