This article examines the process of the Japanisation of the Chinese word kakugo "覚悟", and its morphological and semantic changes which took place during this process. Being of Chinese origin, the Chinese word "覚悟" first appeared in Japan in the documents of the Nara period. However, it was not incorporated into Japanese texts because of its purely Chinese origin. As a result, in the Nara period, the use of the word "覚悟" was restricted to Chinese texts written in Chinese characters or to texts written in a mixture of Chinese and Japanese words. In particular, it was frequently used in the daily records of court nobles. The present article maintains that the use of the word" 覚悟" in the texts written in a mixture of Chinese and Japanese and its evolution into the verb form of the "sa-variation"(サ変) reflect a trend towards its routinisation. From the morphological perspective, several cases of morphological changes, not detected in the Chinese context, can be observed due to the Japanisation of this word. Thus, the routinised use of "覚悟" and changes in its meanings were also accompanied by an increased diversity of its meanings and uses. A comparison of the meanings of "覚悟" in the Japanese context and their counterparts in the Chinese one clearly points to the fact that, starting from the Heian period, the word "覚悟" has developed new meanings, which are not found in the Chinese context. Moreover, in the Kamakura period, still more new meanings and new uss of the word "覚悟" appeared, which were roughly identical to those used in modern Japanese. Therefore, as this study demonstrates, the word "覚悟" has undergone significant transformation and expansion in its meanings and uses.
