In FY2021, we continued our research, focusing on the activities of the Iiji Gomoza Kabuki preservation society in Iiji-cho, Ena City, but due to COVID-19, many activities were restricted. The society was scheduled to perform for May `Hakone Reigen Chikai no Adauchi' in "Seiryu no Kuni Gifu Ji-kabuki (local kabuki) Seizoroi performances". It was, however, staged without an audience. The members received choreography instruction from Ms. Danjo Matsumoto in advance. She is one of the leaders of ji-kabuki in the Tono region, and it was a great benefit to be able to watch her teach them. The records she kept also revealed the performances of the Iiji Gomoza Kabuki preservation society since 1950. According to the list, the most frequently performed play was `Yoshitsune Senbonzakura- Yoshinoyama', followed by `Ehon Taiko-ki the 10th act'. Some of them are rarely performed in grand kabuki today, and are considered to be characteristic of ji-kabuki in the Tono region. In Ena City, there have been several attempts to hand down the tradition of ji-kabuki to the next generation. One was a kabuki lecture and another was a training session for the Misato Elementary School Kabuki Club by Mr. Icho Nakamura, a grand kabuki actor from Ena City. In parallel with the above research, we collected videos, photographs, and literary materials related to past ji-kabuki in Iiji-cho, and digitized them. We plan to return these results to the community, analyze their contents, and contribute to this project.
