Abstract

We compared syntactic comprehension ability by matching chronological age and vocabulary comprehension ability, using the Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PVT-R) and Japanese Test for Comprehension of Syntax and Semantics (J.COSS) for 19 preschool boys with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders (ASD group) (5-6 years-old) and 25 typically developing boys (TD group). The syntactic comprehension ability results for the measured sentence comprehension level of the ASD group were signifi cantly lower than that of the TD group. In the ASD group and TD group, there was no signifi cantly different answer rate for all sub tasks. This data suggests that preschool boys with ASD may have lower ability to understand syntactic comprehension than TD children.
