Description

A literature review was conducted to clarify the effects of intergenerational interaction between nursing students and community-dwelling older adults and activity-related differences in such effects. We searched articles published between 2005 and 2020 using the following combination of keywords: “older adults,” “nursing students,” and “interaction” and “community,” “older adults,” “interaction,” and “nursing students.” From the eight articles identifi ed, descriptions of the effects of interaction were extracted and analyzed using qualitative integration. The effects of interaction on nursing students were classifi ed into seven categories, including “discovering older adults’ strengths through activities in the community,” and those on older adults were classifi ed into three categories, including “developing a sense of being useful.” When focusing on the effect of each activity content, the experience of visiting and participating in the community, supporting the health of older adults, and working together with them helped students gain a better understanding of community activities. Regardless of the content, all the activities effectively promoted students’ awareness about the strength and individuality of older adults. Older adults developed a sense of being useful and health expectations from the activities of sharing their knowledge and experience and collaborating with students. The results suggest that when planning opportunities for intergenerational interaction, the content should be designed according to its purpose to make it more effective.
