Abstract
Local newspapers significantly impact the people of a prefecture, influencing multiculturalism and the future acquisition of international students. This study aimed to identify international students published in a local newspaper, Nagasakishimbun , in 2020— the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We used text mining to analyze 66 articles. The results of the co-occurrence network analysis showed that local newspapers recognized the presence of international students in the prefecture as a target to report on and that international student policies were communicated in relation to the local communities of Nagasaki City, Sasebo City, Isahaya City, and Goto City. Although educational institutions play a significant role in supporting international students, the articles were unique in their coverage of certain issues. The articles also showed that support for international students was provided not only by educational institutions but also by local governments and citizens on various scales and levels. Future longitudinal studies are needed to determine whether these reports have triggered further support from the county residents.
