Abstract

We have translated the second part of the conclusion of The Legendary Topography of the Gospels in the Holy Land by M. Halbwachs into Japanese. Following the previous volume’s translation, Halbwachs proved that collective memory was reconstituted by the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, which directly referred to Jesus. They preserved the memories of Jesus and transmitted Christian beliefs and dogma. In addition, this translation includes the embellished history of the Crusades, The Liberation of Jerusalem by Tasso. While Chateaubriand showed the difference between Tasso’s work and the topography of Jerusalem, Halbwachs showed the difference between history and collective memory because of it.
