Abstract

This article aims to analyze the situation of house unions in Singapore. Trade union shall be registered by the Registrar under compulsory registration system. House unions have been registered around 1960. But “Learning from Japan Movement” has been advocated by the Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in October 1981 to promote productivity for economic development. NTUC admitted that house unions were effective tools to achieve economic development as only one national center of trade unions since 1984. Then house unions have gradually been increasing till now. Industrial unions also participate in NTUC. Not only house unions but also industrial unions are cooperative to maintain good industrial relations together with the government and employers association. This relationship is named as corporatism industrial relations.
