Description

This paper is based on participatory observation of a theater production involving collaboration between Deaf and hearing people. It examines the dynamics of collaboration between Deaf and hearing people, the nature of the resulting production, and the responses of those involved. In recent years, support for art activities by people with disabilities has developed in Japan. But appreciation and creation tend to be treated as two separate categories of experience. This fieldwork revealed, however, that the processes of appreciation and creation were hard to disentangle when observing the participation of Deaf people in the creation of artworks. Two things became clear during the fieldwork. First, theatrical expression can be transformed into an inclusive form of expression through collaboration between Deaf and hearing people. Second, through theater production, Deaf and hearing people can deepen their understanding of each other's culture. Thus, learning through collaboration between Deaf and hearing people is emerging.
