Description

This study unfolds possibilities and challenges of participatory "sewing" in the context of art through a case study of a project held in Japan by an "Asian" female artist. It analyzes not only the final artwork but also the process of the workshops presented. Participatory "sewing" art, "HOUSE OF COMFORT" by Filipino artist Alma Quinto, was held in four different art museums in Japan from 2012 to 2013 as part of the exhibition entitled "Women In-Between: Asian Women Artists 1984-2012". The title of this work implies that a "house" is a comfortable space but it also possesses hidden power politics that could contain the risk of abuse. It is possible to say that abuse is a reproduction of the power politics embedded in the system of a "house". The "museums" that presented this artwork is not a "house", but it also has a "system". During the workshop of "HOUSE OF COMFORT", the "museums" became a comfortable space, which gave protection to the participants who were put in a vulnerable position and provided them an opportunity to develop new relationships with each other through the shared experience of participation.
