Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the development of name writing in preschool children and to create an assessment matrix for evaluating name writing. The participants were 40 preschoolers. The measures used in this study were name writing, a vocabulary comprehension task, a vocabulary expression task, a letter identification task, and a phonological awareness task. The name writing samples were classified according to Liberman's name writing evaluation matrix (Liberman, 1985), and the results showed that the children developed in the following order: symbols that are not exact letters, refusal to write letters, ability to write a few letters in their names, understanding of the number of letters in their names (but not yet conventional letters), and ability to write their names correctly. Spearman's rank correlation was used to study the association between name writing and language tests. The only significant correlation was found for the letter identification task (ρ=0.46, p<0.05). This may be due to the limited age range of the subjects, and future surveys should be conducted with a wider age range.
