Abstract
Objective: We focused on the understanding of illness and disability and the experiences of those who work while having disclosed their illness or disability, and clarified the processes leading to continued employment. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 workers who disclosed their illness or disability, and the results were analyzed using a modified grounded theory approach. Results: Seven categories were identified as processes leading to the continuation of employment for workers who self-disclose their illness or disability: 'Emotional turmoil due to disclosure of the illness or disability'; 'Facing oneself and taking the first step toward working in society'; 'The ill or disabled self'; 'Self-disclosure as part of creating a work environment'; 'Supportive work-place environment'; 'Presence of people who acknowledge the illness or disability and give support'; and 'Changes in family relationships due to the employment situation'. Discussion: Nurses need to broaden their views to incorporate the employment of the people concerned, support them in understanding their illnesses, and support people with disabilities who are struggling in their employment. In addition, the results point to the importance of sharing information with community supporters regarding the issues and necessary support in the community of those affected, and to create an environment in which medical institutions and community supporters, including nurses, can work together to support the parties.
