Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to clarify the implementation status of support programs for individuals with cognitive impairment caused by acquired brain injury (ABI) and explore qualitative effectiveness indicators of rehabilitation support for these individuals. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted on the implementation status of the support project for individuals with cognitive impairment caused by ABI and that of consultation support for these individual and qualitative issues of medical and welfare coordination, targeting 119 bases of the National Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities website. Simple tabulation and correlation and factor analyses were conducted. Results: Responses were obtained from 59 locations (recovery rate, 51.3%). A strong correlation was found between the annual number of consultations and that of lectures, case study meetings, liaison meetings for supporters, specialized consultations for specialists, and meetings for individuals with disabilities and their families. A strong correlation was also noted between the annual number of consultations and number of individuals who started employment services, started welfare services, and returned to work or found employment. Three factors were extracted in the factor analysis of the qualitative outcomes of the project for the dissemination of support for individuals with cognitive impairment caused by ABI, namely, “multilayered cooperation,” “achievement of social participation,” and “results of consultation support.” Conclusion: The annual number of consultations reflected the effectiveness of the support dissemination program. The three factors of the qualitative outcomes of the project can be used to judge the effectiveness of the project.
