Abstract

“Child Development and Diagnosis (Otsuki Shoten)”, supervised by Masato TANAKA and Sugie TANAKA, is a set of slide material s consisting of 2 volumes for under 1 year old infants published in 1983 and 3 volumes for preschool infants published in 1991 (photos by Tomoyuki ARITA, audio tapes and scenarios included). Throughout about 40 years of teaching life, Akio WATANABE has used them as a teaching material in special needs education subjects (Tottori University 1982-2010, Osaka Seikei University 2020-23) and human development and environmental studies subjects (Kobe University 2011- 19). When we was unable to hold face to face classes due to the covid-19 pandemic (2020-), slides were digitized and used for online lectures, or recorded so that they could be viewed on demand. This digital version teaching material is easy to use for lectures after face to face classes resume. It is extremely useful for students who wish to become teachers or childcare workers to learn about the growth potential of children (including children with disabilities) and their developmental path, as well as to acquire the foundation to create practices that guarantee the development of children when they get a job. In this report, after introducing our attempts to convert “Child Development and Diagnosis” into teaching materials and class practices, we discussed how to deal with infant development in special needs education subjects (Akio WATANABE) and childcare and early childhood education subjects (Tamae TAKAGI).
