Axial Thrust, Disk Friction Torque and Leakage Loss of Radial Flow Turbomachinery

The analytical method for the flow along an enclosed rotating disk superposed with radial through-flow was applied to the flow at the back of an impeller of radial flow turbomachinery. The calculated results of axial thrust and disk friction torque were shown to be in satisfactory agreement with the measurements. The effects of various influencing parameters upon them have been made clear quantitatively with this method. The results show that the leakage flow, the Regnolds number and the impeller performance have conspicuous influence upon them in the case of radial inward leakage. The simple graphical method of calculating the leakage flow-rate with mainly influencing parameters taken into consideration have been put forward. Lastly, the performance of axial thrust, friction torque and leakage loss of a centrifugal pump was made clear with the present method for various specific speeds. The results have been compared with those by the conventional calculation method, which resulted that the present method gave far larger axial thrust and much smaller friction torque and leakage flow-rate.
