Abe Yoshishige (1883-1966) who is generally known as one of the liberal philosophers in modern Japan, had resided in Korea as a Professor at Keijo Imperial University for nearly 15 years [from 1926 to 1940]. At that time, Korea, as a colony under Japanese control, was oppressed by Japan. His views on Korea have been examined by several researchers until now. However there is a noticeable disagreement among their argument about the characterization of his attitude toward Korea. In this article, I will firstly correlate his views on Korea with his outlook of the world beyond concerning Korea, for such a perspective has been neglected by previous studies on Abe. That is to say, I will clarify his interpretation of the relationship between individual and society, his fundamental views on international relations, his observation of the present state of Japanese culture, his views on colonialism and Japanese colonial policy, in relation to his views on Korea. Then I would like to characterize his attitude toward Korea, again. In my opinion, Abe was a genuine colonialist and his superficial favorable posture to Korea was nothing but an expedient to facilitate Japanese colonial rule of Korea.
