Abstract
International students experience various extracurricular activities and off-campus life as well as course-studies. We have to understand them not only as "students" but also as "citizens" . This paper examines where and how international students in Japan create memorable and continuous human-relations. In order to do so, this study was based on interviews towards former international students. It appears that there is a large variety of opportunities for them to engage in significant human-relations and to find places where they can be themselves besides the classrooms, such as student clubs, host family activities, part time jobs and travels. This variety of opportunities seems not to depend on individual attributes of each student. Rather than that, the students choose their relationships with important people or places out of a pool with various options. This result leads to the conclusion that universities are required to provide the students as many encounter opportunities as possible, even though the consequences of encounters are uncontrollable and unpredictable. All the more, it is of ultimate importance that conditions for international students to start their relationships by themselves are provided.
