  • Explanation of Plate: “Goose” by Noriaki Iwahashi (Mie Prefectural Art Museum)

説明

Noriaki IWAHASHI (1835-83) who painted this piece was dispatched by the government as an apprentice technician when the World Exposition was held at Vienna in 1872 and studied copper-plate printing and lithograph. He is well known for the introduction of some new techniques in these fields to Japan. Moreover, he should be assessed as one of the few aritsts who studied Western painting methods in Europe in the early Meiji Era. “Goose” is a work of 1875 and is about the only extant work which informs us of his painting technique based on his study experience in Europe. This water colour painting shows an excellent realistic method and is of the highest skill among the Western-style painters of the time. This piece is noteworthy also as one of the earliest still-lives in the Meiji Era.
