While classic languages such as Ancient Greek and Latin still retain their proper synthetic morphology in the formation of the perfect tense, say, reduplication, later languages such as French, Italian and English have developed a periphrastic compound tense with the aid of a perfect auxiliary, that is, avoir, avere and have respectively. But in spite of this indubitable linguistic fact we should not shut our eyes to the existence of the more time-honored perfect auxiliary be. This paper is chiefly concerned with the perfective aspect in Middle High German.
