The discussions of this problem in the study of religion are collected and introduced in the reader edited by R. T. McCutcheon, The Insider/Outsider Problem in the Study of Religion (London, 1999), where the insider is regarded as the religious subject and the outsider as the researcher. This framework is too narrow. The concept of the outsider should be widened further to include the persons (both religionists and researchers) outside the sect within the same religion, and even those other than a single person within the same sect and religion. It is fundamental to understand first the insiders empathetically from their own standpoint. It is then necessary for the outsiders to consider objectively what they have understood from inside. And the problems involved in this process are discussed in this article, based mainly on the history of Islam. The insiders assert what they believe to be the true Islam in contradistinction to the outside researchers. Thus there appeared infinitely various Islams, which even change day by day. Considering these varieties, how can the outsiders talk about Islam? In order to be fair, they have to describe all the Islams one by one. This is impossible. Then, what should the outsiders do? One approach is a typology, or a classification of various Islams. And an example will be shown here.
