テイラーにおける〈地平の融合〉と〈解釈学的循環〉 / おわりに / The aim of this paper is to clarify the features of Charles Taylor’s holistic understanding of society and assess if it is tenable. The first half of the paper will expose Taylor’s argument for holism by closely looking at his relatively recent conception of ‘social imaginary’. Taylor’s attempt to situate Western modernity within a holistic moral framework and his consequent critique of the simple understanding of ‘disenchantment’ are, as it will be shown, inseparably tied with his philosophical anthropology, which in turn is located within the tradition of critical hermeneutics. This indeed enables him to eschew naive realism, while being sensitive to the plurality of goods. Yet, it may be still arguable that his philosophical anthropology may not be able to provide a fully adequate basis for his project of social criticism. The second half of the paper will critically examine Taylor’s claims by referring, for instance, to Habermas’ arguments, and suggest some potential limitations.
