Abstract

6. Zhao-Liewen and his diary Nengjinju-riji This section focuses on the life of Zhao-Liewen (1832-1893) who was the editor of Changzhou Guanzhuang Zhao-shi zhipu (the genealogy of Zhao family), the main material of this article. Zhao-Liewen, the son of Zhao-Renji, was a member of the Taiyuangong branch. After failing in the Provincial - examination, Zhao-Liewen became a staff member of the army headquarters for the battles against the Taiping Rebellion and enjoyed Zeng-guofan’s favor, which raised him to the position of Department Magistrate of Cizhou and Yizhou successively in Metropolitan Area. After serving for several years, he resigned from the official service. Thereafter, Zhao-Liewen, being free from burdens of official work, lived a country life as gentry in the residence he purchased in Changshu County of Suzhou Prefecture. His diary Nengjinju-riji, which he wrote regularly from 1858 to 1889, vividly reveals us various aspects of the social life of the times.
