Abstract

The purposes of this paper are to describe the framework of the Global Education Project (GEP) in Australia and to reveal its characteristics. The GEP is a national project aiming to expand high-quality practices of global education throughout Australia. It has been led by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), and it is said that global education in Australia has evolved from development education. So I overviewed a brief history of development education in Australia. I next revealed the GEP framework. The project has three major initiatives; implementing some programs in every state and territory, developing and publishing teaching materials on global education, and launching and updating the Global Education Website. I pointed out that the GEP has established a system that makes it possible to expand practices representing the intention of AusAID through these initiatives. I then analyzed a program conducted by Ms. Browett who is in charge of the GEP in Tasmania. Through these investigations, I pointed out three major GEP characteristics: (1) It is supported by the federal government, which gives it a solid base on which to continue stable activities; (2) We can find a variety of global education under the GEP which provides one framework of global education taking a certain stance as a national project; (3) Accumulated studies of development education plays an important role in ensuring a possibility in implementing various global education practices.
