Abstract

The roofs of houses are wholly or locally damaged by high winds, because strong suctionsact on some parts of the roof and occasionally vortices are generated in the region near thewindward edge of the roof. The characteristics of the wind pressures on a gable roof werestudied by the full-scale measurement. Mean wind pressure coefficients for the suction aresmaller than -1.0 in many cases, and the observed maximum value in magnitude is -1.38.The periodic components of the wind pressure fluctuations were sometimes observed Thepeak factors for wind suction are 4 or 5. Model tests were performed in the turbulent andsmooth fow of a wind tunnel, and the results are discussed in comparison with those of thefull-scale measurement.
