Description

This study analyzed the function of the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius muscles, and compared differences between two respective segments of these muscles. Twelve healthy males with a mean age of 26. 1 years, participated in this study. Electromyographic activity during isometric contraction for three seconds was measured in the superior segment and inferior segment of the gluteus maximus, and the anterior segment and middle segment of the gluteus medius muscles, following six directions, flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, flexionabduction, extension-abduction, at the neutral position of the hip. The following three points were noted ; 1. Maximal electromyographic activity in the superior segment of the gluteus maximus muscle, was shown in the hip extension-abduction direction. Likewise, the inferior segment of the gluteus maximus also demonstrated maximal electromyographic activity in the extension-abduction direction. The lowest level of activity occurred in both the superior segment and inferior segment during hip adduction. 2. Maximal electromyographic activity in the anterior segment of the gluteus medius muscle, was shown in the hip extension-abduction direction. Likewise, the middle segment of the gluteus maximus also indicated maximal electromyographic activity in the extension-abduction direction. Muscle activity in the anterior segment of the gluteus medius muscle in hip extension was greater than that in hip flexion. 3. Muscle activities in each muscle segments both of the gluteus maximus and the gluteus medius muscles, were similar at 0 degrees of hip flexion.
