Description

This review focused on studies of history textbooks in Italy, especially studies of Antonio Brusa, a researcher of history education. Brusa proposed a theory of history textbook and had compiled textbooks for middle school based on his theory. In the latter half of 1970s, Italian researchers of historical education discussed a new vision of history education. Some of them insisted on abandoning textbooks due to ideological risks. Argument about textbooks has continued to the present. Brusa is regarded as a defender of textbooks because he maintained that textbooks were effective instruments even for history education. Brusa insists that history textbooks must have the 'complexity' of 'content', 'structure' and 'language' and this 'complexity' overcomes the ideological risks of textbooks. He has added the 'complexity' of 'content', 'structure' and 'language' to conventional textbooks by including various types of history and approach and by writing textbooks in various styles.
