シェイクスピアの喜劇、『尺には尺を』はしばしば問題劇と言われることがある。それは、劇の主人公、ヴィンセンシオ公爵が行う処女の入れ替えと首の入れ替えが、倫理的問題を惹起しないかという疑念を生じるからである。劇を、慈悲を説くキリスト教的アレゴリの観点から考察したかつての批評、研究とは対照的に、最近の研究や批評では、公爵の統治戦略の観点から捕らえるポストモダン的なものが優勢である。これらのアプローチの価値は認めつつも、本論では、観客の反応を重視するアプローチを採用する。公爵の行動と台詞を、筋の必要の観点から焦点を当てることにする。分析によって分かることは、公爵は大体において筋の必要にしたがって行動するものの、特にベッド・トリックの工作において筋の必要とは離れて恣意的に行動したり、台詞を言う。これらの行動は、観客に対してブレヒトの言う異化効果を与えることになる。観客は公爵の行動を冷めた眼で見るようになるのである。本論は、公爵の言動が観客に与えるユニークな効果のさまざまな面について考えるものである。

Shakespeare's comedy, Measure for Measure, is often referred to as a problem comedy, mainly based on the argument that the exchange of both heads and maidenheads as plotted by Duke Vincentio, the protagonist, may cause problems in terms of ethics or morality. Challenging those conventional interpretations which have considered the play as a Christian allegory celebrating mercy over retaliatory justice, the trend of recent scholarship is to address this play in terms of power politics and to view its plot as Duke Vincentio's scenario of reconfirmation of state authority. Despite the obvious advantages of these postmodern approaches, my argument employs an audience-response-oriented approach, focusing especially on whether the audience feels that what the Duke does and says is necessary for the plot or not. On analysis, we find--though the Duke acts according to the requirements of the plot in most scenes--Vincentio sometimes, in the bed-trick plot among others, peremptorily transgresses the bounds of the plot, thereby producing a Brechtian Verfremdungseffekt on the part of the audience. Members of the audience are hindered from simply identifying themselves with the protagonist of the play. In this dissertation, various phases are analyzed concerning the unique effect produced by the Duke's actions and speeches on the audience.
