日本語のコ・ソ・ア, 英語のthis・thatなどの指示詞は, 日本語の授業でも英語の授業でも初期の段階で教えられるが, いずれの場合も現場指示の用法にとどまり, 文脈指示等の非現場指示用法が体系的に教えられる事は中級・上級の段階でも殆どない.実際には, 非現場指示の用法のほうが現場指示より多く使われるにもかかわらず, また, 現場指示の用法を学習すればそれから容易に非現場指示の用法を類推できるというものではないにもかかわらずである.その当然の結果として, 日本語上級の話者にも, 英語上級の話者にも, 所謂初級語彙とみなされているコ・ソ・ア, this・that等の指示詞の習得に問題がみられる.本稿は, 1)日英語の指示詞の対照研究, 2)日本語及ぴ英語学習者の指示詞習得に関する対照研究のためにおこなったパイロットスタディーについて, その概要と結果の報告, 3)日本語教育・英語教育双方への提言よりなる.

Demonstratives, both in English and Japanese, are taught to learners at a relatively early stage in a second / foreign language teaching syllabus. However, in the teaching of THIS and THAT in English and KO, SO and A in Japanese, focus is on spatial-temporal deixis. Explicit teaching of deixis in terms of discourse reference is sorely lacking. The result of the pilot study reported here will suggest that discourse reference deixis needs to be included in a language syllabus as even advanced non-native speakers of English and Japanese do not have complete mastery in this area.
