Abstract
[Summary] The present paper aims to show an original birth certificate of Joseph Nicolas Felix Midon (1840-1893), a missionary of the Missions Etrangeres de Paris (MEP) and the first bishop of Osaka, Japan, of the Roman Catholic Church with his brief biography and his family tree. It gives us accurate administrative information of his birth. And, his biographical sketch will help us better understand the important role that he played in the religious history of Japan in the late 19th century, especially from the 1870s to the 1890s. Midon, born at Bonviller in France, was sent as a missionary to Japan in 1870. After having worked under Bernard-Thadee Petitjean and Pierre-Marie Osouf, he was ordained as the first bishop of the Diocese ofOsaka in 1891 and had presided over the Diocese before leaving Japan in 1892 for health reasons. His biographical description is mainly based on the following book : L'abbe Marin, Mgr Midon, Eveque d'Osaka, P. Lethielleux, Paris, 1901.
