The Institute of Mining Geology became part of the Department of Geosciences, Mining Engineering and Materials Processing, as a result of faculty reorganization in 1990, and was renamed as the Institute of Applied Earth Sciences. After further reorganization in 1998, the department name was altered to the present-day Department of Earth Science and Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Resource Science, but the Institute of Applied Earth Sciences title was carried over. In the present paper, the author explains the origins of the Institute of Mining Geology and explores its development in the context of the long histories of the Akita Mining College and the Mining College of Akita University.
