Since the Minimalist Program(Chomsky 1995)introduced the notion “functional features” as points of deviation among natural languages, researchers of language acquisition have been trying to figure out what forms developing grammars possibly take within the Minimalist framework. This research note provides brief summary of the new linguistic theory in comparison with pre-Minimalist theories, together with some latest studies of adult second language acquisition. The summaries of the studies show that predictions of possible interlanguage grammars have become much more fine-tuned in the new theory, though some problems are yet to be solved.
