This paper aims to clarify how the Eizon Order developed in Chikugo Province (modern Fukuoka Prefecture) during the Middle Ages. Now a ruin, Jodo Temple, a branch temple of the Saidai Temple in Nara, was located at that time in Chikugo and was headquarters of the Eizon Order. In this paper, the author will focus on identifying when it became an Eizon Order branch temple and what role it played, and also introduce a newly-found list of 15th century Saidai Temple branch temples.
