Description

Metallic Ni ultrafine particles were prepared by the chemical reduction in a liquid-phase using LiAlH_4 or NaBH_4. The average particle size of these particles was below 100nm, which was also suggested by the observations using Transmission Electron Microscope. X-ray diffraction analysis of Ni ultrafine particles resulted in the formation of amorphous Ni metal. Ni ultrafine particles prepared with LiAlH_4 were found highly active for benzene hydrogenation to cyclohexane. It is also noted that the catalytic activity of amorphous metallic Co ultrafine particles obtained for the benzene hydrogenation exceeded that of Ni particles. α-Fe_2O_3 particles were converted into metallic Fe ultrafine particles with LiAlH_4 in nonaqueous media, having no catalytic activity for the hydrogenation reaction. Fe_3O_4 ultrafine particles were also obtained by the present method.
