This case study describes three Non Profit Organizations providing social services in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. This study is based on research carried out between July and September, 2004. Two of the NPOs have relatively histories beginning in 1920. Two of the organizations that have the word "Community" or "Neighborhood" in their names are based in the African American community. Examining the three NPOs histories, one theme emerges. The movement of residents has resulted in the fragmentation of the area. It has not, however, lead to racially or socio-economically mixed residential areas in Ann Arbor or its outskirts. Superficially, the fragmented areas appear to be peaceful, but there is a lack of meaningful interaction between groups. In this situation, keeping to discrete groups is seen as necessary for survival. This report describes the efforts of the three NPOs to serve clients while competing for a limited supply of social service funds.
