This paper aims to show how Walras studiedideas of the past economists and interpretedthe history of economic thought in constructinghis theories of pure, social and appliedeconomics. It is clear that, unlike Schumpeter,Walras did not regard the history of economicthought only as the formation process of generalequilibrium theory. From younger days, hedevoted a lot of energies to studying manyeconomists and socialists’ ideas from the perspectivewhich is not limited to pure economictheory. Although many studies have beenmade on the origins of Walras’s pure theory, littleattention has been given to this point. In addition, unlike the cases of Marx and ofKeynes, Walras’ own perspective on the historyof economic thought, especially how he himselfabsorbed the classical economics, has beenstrangely neglected. When scholars compareWalras’s pure model with classical analysis, their arguments are often based on the moderndistinction between Classical and Neoclassicalschools and they concentrate their attentionson British classical school. Indeed Walras refersto J. S. Mill and Ricard in his Elements, butwe can’t find their influence in the formationprocess of his economics. We must pay attentionto the fact that Walras was much inspiredby French classical economists includingPhysiocrates both in theory and in policy. Itmust be also noted that Walras’s explanation ofthe classical economics is rather different from our contemporary one. All these things will lead us to understandthe significance of Walras’s pure, social and appliedeconomics more profoundly. It will alsohelp us to clarify the meaning of studying thehistory of economic thought for the greateconomists as well as one aspect of the diffusionprocess of other countries’ economic ideas in France in the 19th century.
