Abstract

The non-edible parts of fruits were found to have high antioxidant activities. Among them, mango seeds showed higher antioxidant potential in DPPH radical scavenging assays. The DPPH radical scavenging abilities were highly correlated with their total polyphenol contents. In the present study, the main active constituents of mango seeds,as determined by HPLC,were pentagalloylglucose and methyl gallate. Both of these compounds showed high radical scavenging activity comparable to that of caffeic acid. Pentagalloylglucose and methyl gallate may, therefore, contribute to the antioxidant capacity of mango seeds in the ethyl acetate phase. The use of the mango seeds may, thus, serve as a significant source of antioxidants.
