  • The Rain-making Rituals in the South-eastern Shanxi, China : Historical studies of the belief in the god of water in dry farming regions

抄録

Among various rain-making rituals performed at the south-eastern Shangxi, it was the faith to Chengtang 成湯 of Xichengshan Mountain 析城山 that acquired the extensive belief sphere. People scooped up water from the pond located on the top of Xichengshan Mountain and brought holy water back to various places in order to pray for the rainfall. Tangwangmiao 湯王廟 Shrine of Xichengshan Mountain, the place for scooping up water and the center of the belief in the god of water, completely disappeared because of the war between Northern Song and Jin and the fire that broke out soon after the fall of Jin. However, the lost of the center determined a tendency of expansion after all and the ritual of scooping up water came to be performed at each branch shrine. Through the inspection of the names of administrative districts, it turns out that the content of the stone stele of the Yuan era was the reuse of the list drawn up in the Jin era. In the background of the list making, there existed such a situation that the northern Henan and the south-eastern Shanxi included in the same administrative area in the Jin era, and this alteration activated the movement and the exchange over both sides of matter and mind.
