Abstract

The booming economy influenced by the World War I caused thus the population growth of urban areas and an increase of industrial laborers. The Rice market in the Kanto region has been expanding due to the country's population growth and the improving living standards that have accompanied its rapid economic expansion. The rice problem was going to be very serious. In 1898, therefore, the Japanese Government started to promote rice production, which made Taiwanese rice increasingly important. The Feng-lai rice quickly gained popularity in Japan and helped to solve Japan's rice shortage problems. This paper analyzes the process of the Taiwanese rice exports to the Kanto region during the Japanese period.
