In Pasando y pasando... (“Passing and Passing...”) (1914), the first collection of criticism published by the avant-garde Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro, the author discusses the “Futurist Manifesto” published by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti in the French newspaper Le Figaro in 1909. Like the earlier critique of Marinetti’s manifesto written by the respected Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío, Huidobro was scathing in his criticism, and also mentioned the Catalonian poet and writer Gabriel Alomar and the Uruguayan poet Álvaro Armando Vasseur as having preceded Marinetti as forerunners of Futurism. Huidobro argued that Alomar anticipated the Italian Futurists in his use of the name, and that Vasseur, while using the term auguralismo, anticipated the content. This paper reaffirms the place in literary history of these two almost forgotten “forerunners of Futurism” and investigates how their existence affected Huidobro’s attitude toward the Futurists.
